In a rural community short on formal childcare, teens are often caring for young children in a variety of settings. Pine River Library’s original Babysitter Training premiered in 2009, training teens in basic childcare, nutrition, and basic early learning and social/emotional literacy skills. After a decade of development, this year PRL presented our most comprehensive training yet. The 2020 Future Ready Babysitter Training courses are supported by the Early Childhood Council of La Plata County and other community partners. The course integrates 21st century skills such as community leadership, business marketing, entrepreneurship, and professionalism and also includes an early childhood care and education career panel, as well as, a full-day basic lifesaving course including CPR/ First Aid training from the American Heart Association. Come learn how one small library is empowering community teens with skills needed to provide high-quality childcare, while also investing in local early childhood workforce development.

Learning outcomes:
  1. Attendees will be able to design their own Babysitter Training for tweens & teens at their library.
  2. Attendees will be able to identify community partners who might help them design and deliver a community Babysitter Training program.
